In 1960, 38 Rhesus Monkeys Escaped from the Zoo in Madison, Wisconsin

They broke out of a loosely wired cage door in the basement of the monkey house, but from there it seemed they didn’t have a plan — most hung out in a nearby canopy of trees as mesmerized onlookers watched

Who was in charge of that loosely wired cage door? My grandpa! Lolz. I remember exactly the monkey house that was there. It was a big white circular flying saucer looking building. It’s not there anymore.

When the monkeys escaped, a lot of them just hung out right around there.

Dale Coyier, the monkey house keeper at the time, theorized that most stuck close to home because they could see the 20 or so older monkeys who’d stayed behind on “monkey island.”

Some got out into the community though, including a few that hung out in an attic over someone’s garage.
