Tune a Guitar to Nothing Else Matters

I know a guy who doesn’t like electronic instrument tuners. He just uses whatever device is in front of him, goes to YouTube, and plays “Nothing Else Matters” by Metallica. The guitar is in a standard E-A-D-G-B-E tuning and the beginning of the song has lots of those open strings being played.

That’s all.

I wonder if we all have a reference point like that. Anytime I feel out of tune, I’ll play the first few notes of “Come As You Are” because, well, it’s the first thing I learned on guitar — sorta like a mile marker reference. If that sounds right, can’t be too, too off.

But if the off sound is the result of poor playing… I still haven’t figured that one out.

I haven’t owned an electronic guitar tuner since I was 18, nearly 24 years ago. Don’t really know why that is, probably because I don’t play in any ‘live’ band situations.

Perhaps it’s a sunken cost fallacy. I have to justify the titanic struggle of learning to tune by ear in the first couple of years learning the guitar. The frustration of tuning too far up and snapping the string and hurting my fingers. Or sounding just that tiny bit off-key on a particular chord shape.

I tuned my Acoustic Yamaha to EADGBE and it still doesn’t sound like Metallica, Nothing else matters guitar.
