In My Opinion…

Robin:

A writing tip for myself in the future, if I may (and I do): delete every use of “…for me…,” “in my opinion,” “some might disagree,” “I think,” etc. etc. These snippets are a bad habit and make your writing fragile, lacking any conviction, with one eye always over your shoulder. After a while these self-doubting platitudes become road bumps that get in the way of describing the thing that you love.

He’s right, it’s a bad habit in writing.

It’s a shield (well I said it’s just my opinion) and it weakens what you’re trying to say.

Obviously you think. You’re writing it. Obviously it’s your opinion. You’re writing it. Obviously some might disagree. It’s the internet. You don’t have to write it.

It comes from real life. These kind of statements make you more amicable at a dinner party, and that’s good. It’s a strange sort of reversal. The strong move in real life is making people like you and if that involves softening your thoughts so you people don’t see you as Guy With Iron Opinions, so be it.

Thoughts? Email me or comment below. Also CodePen PRO is quite a deal. 🙏
