Very well done documentary on Michael Cleveland, the virtuosic fiddle player (against all odds):
Some bits I liked:
- The bit about how it’s a tiring cliche to ask a fiddle player to play a song like The Devil Went Down to Georgia or Orange Blossom Special, but instead of being a snob about it like so many other musicians would be, he’s so grateful he gets to play music, he’ll play it anytime (at least Orange Blossom Special, anyway).
- The bit about what it’s like on the bus touring around. “If you have a really good show, you’re gonna be in a better mood.” So much of life is about what mood you’re in, isn’t it? If people liked your talk, the afterparty is more fun. If you had a big successful release, the Slack channel is more jubilant. The milkshake tastes better after finishing a big race.
- The bit where he’s using all the accessibility features of his iPhone. “I can do pretty much anything you can do.” Including stuff like calling a car, meaning he can get around to jams and gigs entirely by himself, which I imagine is an incredibly freeing feeling. I like it when technology does a good job.
