Does anyone know of any compelling arguments / articles on using microformats (like a simple hCard) on a small scale? I mean just on a personal blog like this.
It’s easy enough to create one, and it’s just a bunch of class names so there is of course no harm in it. But is there any real tangible benefits to it either? I’m all for web standards, and the idea souds like something to really get behind and support, but I’d like to be able to really put my finger on something to bring it all home on why it rocks.
Is there some kind of cool browser extension that auto-detects them and gives you like one-click add-to-contacts? Do search engines see them and use them somehow?
Thoughts?

Also CodePen PRO is quite a deal. 🙏
I am by no means an expert with microformats and I hope this little message helps you with your questions. I have briefly played with microformats and like the idea, the problem is the lack of use among most websites. I do appreciate the convenience of providing contact information in this format. When they are used I am excited. When they are not (which seems to be often), I am somewhat disappointed.
I downloaded the following javascript (sorry cannot remember where) and have it set as a bookmark. When the bookmark is clicked it will display any microformats on the current page within a dialog box where you can add them to your contacts, otherwise it will notify you if there are no microformats on the current page.
javascript:(function(){function%20l(u,i,t,b){var%20d=document;if(!d.getElementById(i)){var%20s=d.createElement(‘script’);s.src=u;s.id=i;d.body.appendChild(s)}s=setInterval(function(){u=0;try{u=t.call()}catch(i){}if(u){clearInterval(s);b.call()}},200)}l(‘http://leftlogic.com/js/microformats.js’,’MF_loader’,function(){return!!(typeof%20MicroformatsBookmarklet==’function’)},%20function(){MicroformatsBookmarklet()})})();
The only sites I can think of to answer some of your questions regarding microformats are…
http://whymicroformats.com/
http://microformats.org/
BTW you can test the javascript to get the microformats on these websites.
I hope this gives you some direction in answering your questions.
Thanks Dale! That’s exactly what I was looking for. That’s a neat bookmarklet. It’s working properly for me but the files it saves (out of Fx3) aren’t quite ideal, might be me though…
The Tails Export FF extension collects all microformat data off a page: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2240
I use them in all my sites, even if it’s just for a small amount of contact info.
The biggest scale I used them is on this site: http://delta.ncsu.edu/about/people/
It lets you download all the contact info for everyone in the department.
Damn, my last comment didn’t come through. In a nut shell I was saying that I use Microformats any time I can.
The largest scale was on: http://delta.ncsu.edu/about/people/
So someone could go there and download contact info for everyone in the department
I’m not really a microformat guru, but I think that Firefox has a plugin (GreaseMonkey maybe) that will display all the hcards on a page. Once clicked I believe the address book should automatically open. Really cool option, but I’m just not sure if this microformat thing will go anywhere.
I use microformats whenever and whereever I can. I use it on a larger scale at work, and a smaller scale on my own blog.
I believe in the semantics of it and the possibilities of it. I’ve been blogging about it recently myself, detailing exactly how I’m using various microformats on my blog.
As for FF extensions, the only one I don’t see mentioned already in your comments is Operator: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/4106
Hi Chris
English is my second language (I’m Brazilian) and it is kinda of hard to follow you the tutorial for Word Press. I was wondering if you made the code available. Hope I am not asking too much…
thank you
Josie
P.S. You have a typo at the top of the page. Sounds – souds.
By the way you have a great voice and an amazing teacher! I guess some people were born to teach other like if it was the easiest thing to do.
