Feedbin, my RSS reader of choice, has a feature where you can subscribe to email newsletter with a provided email address and the pop right into the reader to read there.
I love that. I don’t really need email newsletters in my actual email, I’d rather read them with all the other stuff I read.
Rather than using the Feedbin email address directly (look under Settings > General > Sources for yours), use an intermediary email address. I set up a Gmail email just for this, and have it auto-forward to my Feedbin email. Then when I sign up for a newsletter, I use:new-secret-email+specific-newsletter@gmail.com
I had to do this because I started getting spam in my reader and that was untenable. With this technique, I can cut off any particular spam source and not be forced to cycle the email address entirely and lose all my subscriptions.
Good news though, this round-about trick isn’t necessary anymore because Feedbin release Custom Newsletter Addresses.
There is an unfortunate reality of email newsletters. Since running a fairly large inbound email service, itโs come to my attention that newsletter addresses accidentally leak (or get sold?) to spammers. To combat this, you can now deactivate an address entirely. I consider it good email hygiene to use a unique address for every newsletter you sign up for.
Sweet. I’ll be using this for all new newsletters I sign up for. And some extremely rainy day I’ll probably attempt to migrate all my subscriptions.
good old spamgourmet.com for that and a lot more…
