Combos

Can you remember a single advertisement for Combos? You know, those pretzel/cracker roll-shaped stuffed-with-cheese-like-substance things? They occupy significant shelving space in every single gas station in America, yet I can’t recall a single billboard or television ad for them. To be fair, I looked around a bit and they have done some campaigns in the past, but it seems extremely minimal (TV ad in 1993, sponsor a NASCAR car…) They change their packaging once in a while. They toss out a new flavor once in a while. But no ads. I wonder if they’ve tried a few things and didn’t see any significant upswing in sales so they just don’t waste the money. I’m sure it saves bucket loads of cash not needing an advertising budget. New products could never get away with it, but old products with a strong brand can.

    doood!!!
i was watching some ESPN the other day and saw a glimpse of the Combos sponsored car.
Ever since then, I’ve had their annoying jingle from back in the day stuck in my head:
#9835 Cheese-filled Combos, Combos really cheeses the hunger away #9835

Combos have both a strong brand and a unique product, very different than anything else in the market. Why bother advertising when your product is already prominently displayed in every gas station in the country?
