I Suck at Vacation

I’m not sure I’ve very good at vacation. Whenever I do something, I want to really get into it and try and be the best I possibly can be at it. I know I can never do that with something like, say, snorkeling. As such, I have very little interest in it.

I also like to be mentally engaged. I like to relax in short bursts, but I can’t just “relax” for a week. My brain won’t let me.

I also don’t like to be hot. So sitting on the beach really doesn’t do it for me. I get hot and I get bored. I like to go on vacation where we all sit in the shade and do figure out logic puzzles.

That sounds like me. Over winter break, I redesigned a website. What do most kids do, they relax, lounge around, do nothing. I relaunched that website. I hate long breaks.

    Chris,

Snorkelling is for people who can’t find the bar.

Sit on the beach ’till your hot, jump in the pool, then hit the bar. If the bar happens to be in the pool then so much the better!

    Hope this helps!

I agree that snorkeling is typically boring because it tends to be so passive. That is why I started to spearfish. Spearfishing gives you a purpose while you are swimming around, and it requires strategic maneuvering since the fish are so much faster. Changing a passive activity like snorkeling into a more dynamic activity adds more depth, and enjoyment for me personally.

I know snorkeling was probably just some random activity that you thought of connected to the beach. That being said if a person is open, and applies themselves, vacations do not have to be boring slumberfests. With a little creativity a person can breathe new life into some of the tired vacation cliches.

I don’t think you “suck at vacation…” I think you just have not tried to be the best vacationer you possibly can be! ;)

All I can say is look into these two books.

The Four Hour Work Week by Timothy Ferriss
A bit long and includes things on business, etc. as well as travel and vacation. (Although I’d be shocked if you haven’t read it or heard of this guy — he’s popular with techies.)

    Vagabonding by Rolf Potts
Recommended from the above book, but it gives great resources and philosophical insights to vacationing/traveling.

Seriously read those two if you want to vacation the right way. They’re easy reads, well written, and entertaining as well as useful.

Btw, I don’t know when you last redesigned this site, but I like it =]

    Bueno suerte.

Why say that vacation eq beach? Hiking, visiting old towns, go for a car trip without using GPS and the vacation becomes the logical puzzle of ‘where the … am I’.

That’s how I like to vacate (except I go on bike trips instead of car trips).

  7. I got no problem in enjoying a good vacation, but after a day or two I hunger back to my friend “Graphic Design”. :)

Just had to comment, I dont care wether this post is old or not :P
