I began playing Gemstone in the late 80's, not long after it came out. Since then, I've also put in about 10 years of my life into Everquest, but I've always went back to Gemstone. It IS a very compelling game. I actually subscribed to it again about a week ago. :) Love your page, and I love knowing there are people out there who remember a world where Pinefar and travel tokens and murky portals didn't exist!

Nice to know Im not the only person that still keeps going back. I started playing my junior year of high school...my mom and my best friend played too. I even ended up meeting and living with a guy I met through the game (biggest mistake ever!), but here I am..8 years later...and I'm thinking about re-activating my character...yet again.

Great great read. I'm a current GM for Gemstone IV and reading stuff like this puts a huge smile on my face. The magic that is Gemstone is really hard to describe to someone who hasn't been there so it's always great to hear from fellow Gemstone folk. I actually met my wife at one of the VegasCon's back in the early 2000s. This article was posted to our staff listserve by the current River's Rest guru. Thank you!

I have been in Elanthia for near on 10 years now myself. Not a kid anymore but the excitement still remains. There is something so much more immersive about a text based game. Graphics have their place but for true to life role-playing nothing holds a candle to text. For those who have moved on in life (out of their parents basements with actual jobs) you might want to consider GS4-Plat. Little less killing each other, more in-depth community feel.

Great read. I STILL feel bad about those $500 AOL charges my mom and dad had to deal with. I remember not knowing about lockers, and keeping every thing I found in my heavy backpack. I had 20+ second Roundtimes back then! I took a break when it moved to the web, because I used the AOL interface, I'd never set "foot" on the web. But, the lure of GemStone was great, and I was back in 1997 and I've been back ever since. I wish all the people saying they were toying with coming back would do it, because with the influx of 3D games like WoW, the GS population suffers.

Thanks for the post. I loved Gemstone III. It was so addicting. Spent so many nights killing/resting for hours and hours. I finally forced myself off that game just to discover Asheron's Call.

I believe back in the day they were called MUDs, no? Multi-User Dungeon. I remember playing a few of these before I even had AOL, through telnet. Wish I could remember the names... Magic the Gathering held my attention much better.

Great read! I also started in 1995, first on Prodigy, then AOL. I was a multi-accounter from the start. So many memories, so many years of interaction with people that I have met in real life and consider true friends.
Toying with the idea of playing again, myself...Thanks for sharing the memories.

Awesome memories for sure. I can relate on all accounts. "Pusher" of Radom and Swilling.

Had nightmares back in the day after one death in the old days spent an hour with a GM restoring all of my "precious at the time" items because I died...dropped it all and the game went down. Scary when you died back then for sure......

Thanks for the memory lane

That's sweet! I was a locksmithing rogue too, but ultimately was a traditional OHE ambushers. I was intrigued by the Voln-fuers. I think a huge advantage to that route was all the money you save not spending it on big fancy weapons.
