If you reactivate, can I have your damage weighted axe? Hehehe... Anyways, great read and very true - once you play GS you are destined to leave and return endlessly until Simutronics disappears and/or the desktop computer goes the way of the typewriter.

Wow that brought back memories. Just two months ago I went back and reactivated my account. I must say I am having a blast!

I must say I no longer stay up playing till the sun rises (and I have to go to work!) but I do log a few hours a night enjoying myself.

Thanks for this. I am smiling. I have been considering returning to my first love. I played on AOl at $2.95 an hour. had a $300 bill the first month, but kept playing. I wish I could get my wife to play but her first experience with rpgs is WOW. She will not consider text-based. I am sending her a link to this. Maybe another opinion will convince her.
GS4 is not the same though. I miss the old version. I would definitely pay $15 or $20 bucks a month to get back to that experience. I am talking to you Simu.
Thanks again. Fond memories indeed.

I started in 91 and and have been in and out of the game on and off ever since. Just recently came back again for about the 7th time and I'm having as much fun as ever. It amazes me just how complex this game is.

I began playing Gemstone in the late 80's, not long after it came out. Since then, I've also put in about 10 years of my life into Everquest, but I've always went back to Gemstone. It IS a very compelling game. I actually subscribed to it again about a week ago. :) Love your page, and I love knowing there are people out there who remember a world where Pinefar and travel tokens and murky portals didn't exist!

Nice to know Im not the only person that still keeps going back. I started playing my junior year of high school...my mom and my best friend played too. I even ended up meeting and living with a guy I met through the game (biggest mistake ever!), but here I am..8 years later...and I'm thinking about re-activating my character...yet again.

Great great read. I'm a current GM for Gemstone IV and reading stuff like this puts a huge smile on my face. The magic that is Gemstone is really hard to describe to someone who hasn't been there so it's always great to hear from fellow Gemstone folk. I actually met my wife at one of the VegasCon's back in the early 2000s. This article was posted to our staff listserve by the current River's Rest guru. Thank you!

I have been in Elanthia for near on 10 years now myself. Not a kid anymore but the excitement still remains. There is something so much more immersive about a text based game. Graphics have their place but for true to life role-playing nothing holds a candle to text. For those who have moved on in life (out of their parents basements with actual jobs) you might want to consider GS4-Plat. Little less killing each other, more in-depth community feel.
