You win the million dollar prize!

Going to that second link (the .xpi link) did the trick for me. It brought up the installation warning again, but this time I was able to "allow" it and it installed and the warnings are gone! Thank you!

At some point, I must have disallowed its installation causing this whole mess. Then for whatever reason, I wasn't able to re-allow it on gears.google.com

Go to: http://gears.google.com/
and click on the "Install Gears" button.

According to the site above, Gears is available for Windows, Windows Mobile, Mac, and Linux.

It appears that you are using Firefox 3, I would just make sure that you aren't still using a beta version.

I just installed Gears for my Mac with Firefox 3.0.1, tonight, without issue.

The location of the xpi installation for OSX is:
http://dl.google.com/gears/current/gears-osx-opt.xpi

Another thought, do you have some security related plugin that is locking down further on the installation of add-ons (more than the defaults of Firefox)?

Hope this helps!

Do you remember how you got it installed? It's been over a month for me, no idea how to get it either installed or uninstalled.
